The Benedictine monastery in Hvar is located in the house of the nobleman and poet Hanibal Lucic. The monastery exists since 1664, when two nuns arrived on Hvar fro the island Pag who have established first monastery on this island. The community of Hvar supported the creation of the convent, and also wanted to open up the elementary school for girls inside the monastery walls. The sisters founded the school and have taught for 60 years in the period from 1826 to 1886. The Benedictines are particularly known for its lace of agave throughout the world today, which is fed solely on the island, and also as the tradition for over 100 years, passing from generation to generation.
