Driving down from the South, from Dubrovnik towards Split, there are unforgettable scenes passing before your enchanted senses. Somewhere down that road, by the sea, there is a small town Klek, picturesque place landed on historical remains from Medieval battles around this beautiful Adriatic area. The end of 17th century is marked by a number of wars, some of which Turks drow a young fellows from their own homes to serve their notorious army. One of those was Nikola Nonković from Broćanci. He was recruited in a guard but became a head soon. Meanwhile, there are tough wars between Turks and Venetians. Nonković, who did not lack with honor in Turks army, decided to cross over with Venetians due to their promise to return the land of banished Turks to the natives. Thus, Nonković became the master od the old town of Smerdan and Nonković tower near Klek. History tout us that this fortress have never been concord in the future, although there were battles and sieges with just 57 Croats on one and 4000 and more Turks on the other side. Those are both ruins today on a hill upon Klek, but with a great view on Neum bay and small church St. Mary in it. Surroundings keeps a number of Medieval grave stones which are all tourist attraction now. They survived centuries to point up the comfort and cosiness of private apartments, rooms and vacation houses in Klek.
