Palud beach near Rovinj

Palud beach near Rovinj is located 8 kilometers south of the city center, but a 20-minute drive is worth to find this special place, away from the summer crowds. If you have rented apartment, room or holiday house in Rovinj, you will find this beach just below the Palud Ornithological Reserve, the only wetland in Istria inhabited by over 220 animal species. The Austro-Hungarian army connected the Paluda swamp with a narrow canal to the sea in the early 20th century, to prevent mosquitoes from multiplying in the swamp waters. The project was a mistake, as there are still mosquitoes, but now there are eels and mullets as well, and, fortunately, the diversity of the bird world is not endangered. Admission is free to both the reserve and the beach, which offers a mixture of rocks and pebbles for all those who love wild beaches, pristine beauty, untouched by tourist development, and without artificial attractions.
