Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is also called the Green Heart of Croatia. It is located in central Croatia, between the Sava River and Moslavina Highlands. There are roads leading to it 122 kilometres long from Zagreb, 166 kilometres from Rijeka, and just 28 kilometres from Sisak. Lonjsko polje Nature Park is not only significant for continental Croatia but also for Europe as a whole - the vast wetland area is the habitat and nesting place of a large number of bird species. It is the largest protected floodplain in the Danube River and extends over 500 km square. The rarest birds we encounter here are eagles and black stork, and stork is what Lonjsko polje Lonjsko Field) makes popular in the whole region. The village of Cigoc at the entrance to the Park was declared the European Village of Stork in 1994, due to the fact that it has more stroks than people inhabiting it. In addition to storks, there are also native species of pigs and Croatian shepherds living here. Water floods the area almost half a year, and many fish species spawn right here. Because of this, fishing is one of the most popular activities in the Park, but nothing less interesting is biking, riding a bird watching. You can also take part in numerous educational workshops, photo safari, visit Krapje - a village of traditional architectural heritage, take a tourist boat or rent a canoe.
