If we get off the highway toward Gospić and drive through the magnificent Lika with the tufts of thick forests at the foot of Velebit mountain, it is not difficult to imagine that one of the greatest minds of mankind of all time was born here. Mystical and magical scenery is inspiration to the mind and spirit, and survival in the wilderness of Lika has always sought courage and diligent brain and hands. And perhaps that is why there is no other place where the most inventive scientist of all time could grow up. Nikola Tesla was born on July 9 or 10, 1856 in Smiljan, a village near Gospić. The exact date of birth is difficult to establish but the date of death is reliable, Tesla died in New York on January 4, 1943. His path from the Smiljan school to Polytechnics in Graz was curious and the study ceased in the second year due to the abolition of the Military Border scholarship. Then Tesla works in Maribor, Gospić and Budapest, but his ascent begins at Edison's company in Paris and Strasbourg, where he constructs the first induction engine model in 1883. The most important inventions of Nikola Tesla are alternating multiphase motors and generators based on the rotating magnetic field, alternating current, oscillation transformer, high frequency lighting, wireless transmission of radio signals and energy, remote control, Tesla turbine and radio. In short, the world we know today would not exist without Nikola Tesla and his fascinating mind. He was awarded in 1917 by Edison's medal, and later he became doctor in honor at the University of Zagreb and Paris and the Polytechnic School in Graz. The Memorial Center of Nikola Tesla in Smiljan was opened in 2006, thus do not miss to find out more about our genius if you rent an apartment, room or holiday house in Gospić and its surroundings or if you are traveling south. The Memorial Center is the architectural interpolation of objects that have been upgraded to the Tesla birth house, the barn, and the Church of Sv. apostola Petra and Pavla. An interactive and multimedia setting will leave you breathless and you can enter the Museum from 9 am to 6 pm in the summer and 9 am to 2 pm in the winter time. You can find details on ticket prices, the Museum and Tesla`s achievements at mcnikolatesla.hr.
