Whether you have found an apartment in Dubrovnik or the surrounding area, Lazareti are the place worth visiting. This complex of 10 connected rooms with five inner courtyards was built not far from the eastern entrance outside the old city walls. It is surrounded by a high wall with entrances from the sea and from land. In 15th century Lazarettos for Dubrovnik had the same value as a protective walls. They were defending from the plague and other infectious diseases. In the year 1377, authorities of Dubrovnik issued the regulation Liber viridis (Green Paper), which prohibited the entry into the city and surrounding for newcomers from infectious and suspicious areas. Thus Dubrovnik was the first town in the world to introduce quarantine as protection against the spread of infections. In 17th century Lazarettos had been the largest and the best maintained quarantine in the Mediterranean. The newcomers had had to spend 40 days in quarantine. Lazarettos were built in Cavtat and on the islands, as well. It should be noted that the conditions of the Lazaretto were good for that time; quarantine was equipped with all medical and spiritual care. The spirit of humanism which marked Dubrovnik Middle Ages culture, still inhabits Lazarettos. Lazarettos is gathering place for artists and associations from Dubrovnik region and their guests from around the world today. The most popular Dubrovnik nightclub where you can dance to exhaustion is also here. The future for Lazarettos is to become a multimedia museum of the city, the starting point for all visitors of Dubrovnik.
