Nevertheless, although the beach is less crowded, the island is ready for a new beginning, the beginning of harvest. Poor island soil gives little but precious. Jelsa Wine Festival is held annually at the last weekend in August and it is not only a tourist attraction but the sincere ode to a thousand-year-old tradition of viticulture and the art of making premium wines. The first vines were planted on the island Hvar by the Greeks in the 4th century BC, and the dynamic landscape of the island proved to be ideal for the cultivation of different varieties: Plavac Mali, Bogdanusa, kuc, parc, muskat, marastina, toscano trebbiano. Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also breeding in Jelsa field in the past decades.
Two days of the festival bring unique opportunity to taste honey drops of winegrowers with a lavish gastronomic offer of local specialties. The interesting thing is that the beer is expressly prohibited during the Wine Festival! Still, if desired, you can taste brandy from island households as a unique part of Dalmatian customs and one of the warmest expressions of welcome. The fun is not missing; in addition, there is a music program which lasts until early morning hours.
