The old town of Jelsa is an unavoidable part of the visit to this tourist destination if we have rented accommodation in Jelsa and want to get acquainted with fairytalish and rich island history. The ancient defensive walls and houses of the Roman legionaries are left out of the old part of Jelsa to remind us of the historical importance of the ancient settlement of the old town of Jelsa (Civitas Vetus Ielsae). You will be able to see partially preserved ancient walls stretching from the Mina beach to Bočić place. Today's wall is high between 2.50 and 3 meters, with still visible holes in the lower layer where the guards stood. There was an Augustinian monastery from 1605 to 1787 in the place of today's cemetery. Only a church with its original bell tower has been preserved till nowadays.
