Above the town Hvar, on a hill, there is the ancient fortress. It was the town itself back in the 16th century, called by the locals Fortress or Spanjola. Fortress was the defensive fortification and protector of the town, whilst today is one of the best preserved evidence of the tumultuous and fascinating history of the city of Hvar at the global level. Fortress was renovated in 1971 and transformed into an exclusive restaurant. Spanjola, or Fortica which is how it is called today, can show you an impressive collection of amphorae and other artifacts from ancient times and the Middle Ages, while its walls offer enjoyment in the panoramic view across the island and the bluish sea. The fort can be reached by a car from the bus station in the west part of the town up the hill, or by foot from your apartment, room or holiday house, up the stairs which lead to the front door of the Fortica - the Door of the date palms.
