Barone fortress in Šibenik is one of the key points of the medieval fortification system of the city of Šibenik. If you have rented an apartment, room or holiday house in Šibenik, you will find Barone at 80 m above sea level on Vidakuša hill, at the foot of the fortress of St. Ivan. It was built in 1646 to defend against the Turks, who never managed to conquer the city of Šibenik. The fortress lost its military purpose and recognisable parts such as cannon holes and accompanying buildings in the centuries that followed. What the Turks did not succeed in, the pine forest did, which slowly penetrated to the heavy stone walls. In 2014, the renovation project started with EU funds, so today the the Barone fortress in Šibenik is an attractive tourist location. Next to the catering facility, there is also an interpretation centre with multimedia scenes from the Middle Ages.
