Baraban Castle is the testimony of the history of Barban that goes far back in the 8th century, and throughout the centuries, it was the center of the development of this small Istrian town. It consisted of ten buildings, together with a warehouse and a church, surrounded by walls. Within the walls, the towers were built, while outside of the castle was the city loggia was established. Even today, the Barban Castle is the core of the town surrounded by private apartments, rooms and vacation houses in Barban.
On the site of an earlier church, it was built the church of Saint Nicholas in 1701, which is significantly greatest of the original church. Later, the church inside the castle was built on the foundations of the former towers, one was located in the place of the sacristy and the other on the Baptistery site today. One of the most precious relics of the church is a wooden statue of Saint Nicholas, which usually was carried in procession through the city. A special attraction is the three altar painting, which is assumed to be the work of students of Titian.
