Plitvice lakes National Park - Miracle of nature

Of all the legends intertwined with Croatian fibres of soil and roots of it’s ancient woods, maybe this one has the most astonishing affirmation reflected in sixteen cascading lakes.
The beautiful legend refers to one of the true Croatian miracles of nature - Plitvice lakes. The legend says that the good and mercy Black Queen came down from her beautiful castle on mountain Velebit , and saved poor and hardworking peasants from drought creating Plitvice lakes.
That magical haven on earth, made from fairytale, is placed on the source of river Korana, from 480 to 636 m above the sea level. You can reach it on the move of road which goes through the whole country from Dalmatia to Zagreb, accurately in the middle of Kordun and Lika. The Plitvice is the place where the North prairie begins to elevate into South Dalmatia rugged and mountain part, which made Croatia so diverse and unique.
Plitvice has 16 beautiful lakes which, as they fall from small and big rocks, are creating magical, bubbly waterfalls.

The biggest of all, the Big Waterfall is impressive in it’s 72 meters tall water glory. Besides water, Plitvice are full of underground (cave and holes)  and rugged treasures. Water saturated whit calcium carbonate is prerequisite in creating live stone - travertine barriers, which occurs with rich micro flora. These travertine barriers are main features of Park’s flora, which is interesting and unique because of many endemic and rare species. The true beauty of Plitvice is thick woods embracing the lakes whit protected animals like wolf, bear and some rare bird species. Even 120 birds are found on this area. But the most popular animal is the mascot of a Park, bear, because of it’s powerful but friendly look. All these nature treasure is represent Croatian first National park. It is interesting in every season of the year, because of full experience given by bare nature beauty; from summer with bursting life under every leaf and in every single drop of water, to the winter when all that life seems just waiting undercover to jump out from the frozen picture of white dream.
