Bura, jugo, levanat, maestral, burin, ostro, lebic, pulenat, are just some of the names for the winds that are blowing on the east shores of the Adriatic. There is always something blowing on the island, and though we are now discovering again the wind forces and building windmills around the coast, they have been used here it for centuries. Brač island can boast of sustainability and green energy in the past centuries, and the most illustrative example is the windmill of the Ilic family in Sutivan. This mill is actually one of the 125 windmills that were on the island of Brač in the 18th century. This tower is best preserved but it has no wings that give the windmills a distinctive look. The wings were taken off in 1903 when the grinding grain had stopped here, but it is still the symbol of Sutivan and the place where visitors like to take photos and enjoy the southern shores of the island. Otherwise, the Ilic family was one of three famous noble families from Brač, who heavily traded with wine and olive oil all over Europe, with its headquarters in Prague. Today, the old windmill has been converted into a residential building. You will find the mill easy if you rent apartment, room or holiday house in Sutivan, following the coastline to the southeast of the resort, in the deep shadows of tall pines. The interior of the mill still retains many original details, and a tour is possible by agreement with the owners.
