Visnjan is a town located in the western part of Istria, 12 km distanced from Porec, in the area between the river Mirna in the north and the Lim channel in the south. Visnjan is surrounded by forests, pastures and cultivated areas. Some of the natural phenomena of this region are abundant and unpaved pits, and in the vicinity of Visnjan there is also the karst phenomenon of the Baredine pit which is available for tourists to visit. It is the Visnjan Observatory, the place responisble for numerous discoveries of the small bodies of the Solar System. It was founded in 1976 by young enthusiasts. By building a new observatory at Tican, Visnjan will become a science centre for youth education and a tourist destination of great importance, which will develop a new form of tourism - astroturism.
