Although it is called Velika (Big in Croatian), it is a small place located in the Požega Valley in the eastern part of Croatia, near the city of Požega. It has around 6,000 inhabitants who offer accommodation in Velika in their comfortable private houses. Velika is located at an altitude of about 200 meters, at the foot of the Papuk mountain which dominates the landscape of this part of Croatia. This region is known for its natural beauty, such as numerous lakes, forests, and vineyards, so typical of the area of the magical Papuk. Velika is mainly an agricultural area, with a focus on grape, wine, and fruit production. Visitors can enjoy beautiful landscapes, and nature lovers can explore the surrounding forests, lakes, and rivers. Papuk Nature Park exits from Velika with plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and nature walks.
Velika has a rich cultural and historical heritage, which can be seen in churches and chapels scattered everywhere. The town is known for its traditional events and festivals, such as the Days of Velika Wine and Čobanijada. An active holiday in Velika is also ensured by the city pools and the organization of trekking races several times during the warmer seasons.
