The castle is one of the best preserved historical buildings in Croatia. It was restored in the 19th century and it was the first restoration project on the Croatian territory. Rooms of the castle has an area of about 1200 square meters and most of them serves as a unique museum with its own preserved material. The exhibits are witnesses of life of the owners of the castle, from the piano from the first half of the 19th century to the original weapons used by the owners and crew of the castle. Trakoscan castle was the first facility with electric lighting outside urban areas in Croatia, and its heritage is illuminating the insight into the Dark Ages. According to legend, Trakoscan was named after the Thracian facility which existed here in ancient times. In the 13th century the castle was built here, which at that time was a small observation fortress.
Trakoscan was changing owners throughout the centuries, mostly nobles families, and its full splendor was achieved in the 16th century when Draškovici family added a floor to it, built its towers and a courtyard with arcades. Draskovic family inhabited the castle until 1944, when the property was nationalized. The museum was founded in 1953. Ticket prices range from 15 to 30 kuna, and details of the opening hours can be found on trakoscan.hr.
