The wall of Ston

The wall of Stone is even longer than that one in Dubrovnik with its 5,5 kilometers long string of forts and walls, which makes it one of the biggest and the most bright examples of fortification building in Europe. The long string of stone is interrupted with even five forts and forty something towers on its way from Ston to Mali Ston and around towns. In the year 1334 the Republic of Dubrovnik gain Pelješac peninsula and started to build this wall. Through the next four centuries the Republic was building this wall to defend salt works and a mussel farm with the town itself. The wall was 7 kilometers long at first, but numerous earthquakes of Dubrovnik restless area. Ston and Mali Ston, everyone with its own wall are unique example of planned construction in the early Middle Ages due to its urban solutions that complement each other. The wall is connected with the Great Wall, which goes from fort Koruna in Mali Ston to tower Barbanat, where the exit is. There are plenty of towers, many of them with no name, 10 rounded and 31 square, with 6 semi-cirkular bastions. The Great Wall is 1200 meters long. The wall of Ston had its defensive function until 19th century. Today it is a tourist attraction which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. More and more tourists visit it every year, thus almost 40.000 people walki it over in 2013. Visiting time is from 8:30 am till 7 pm. Ticket price is symbolic; 40 kunas for individual and 30 for group visits. Experience invaluable.
