The most important side thing in the world has been discovered in Zupanja for the first time in Croatia, Slavonian town on the banks of Sava river. Zupanja was welcoming British industrialists who invested us in a tanning plant, a product used for tanning leather, at the end of the 19th century. The first football ball arrived in Zupanja with them. People of Zupanja got infected by the game instantly, thus the year of 1880 is considered to be the year when football was born in Croatia. A first football ball in Croatia was found in 1979 at the in a barrack in the town. The story says it was a gift from one of the industrials, while experts estimate that the ball dates from the late 19th century. It is made of natural leather (tanned with tannins, most likely). The ball is privately owned today, but a monument was erected upon its image on King Tomislav Square in Zupanja in 2015. In addition to football, the British also brought tennis in Zupanja, with the first tennis match played a year later here. Another story is closely related to the events and the charms of Zupanja - Katarina Horvatovic and Fredy Hepburn felt in love here and than, she was local girl and he was the one of industry's starting talents. It would be an ordinary love affair if the woman did not move to England after her husband's death, and donated their land and buildings of a former tannery factory to the town of Zupanja. There is the stadium FC Granicar today along with fields of the Tennis Club Zupanja 1881. If you have decided to try the magic of the plains here and find accommodation in Zupanja or the surrounding area, come to play in honour of the playful human spirit still nurtured today with famed Slavonian hospitality here.
