Susak, an island phenomenon and a protected monumental heritage of 3.75 km square with a maximum height of 98m, is located on the northern Adriatic. Susak is connected with Mali Lošinj and Rijeka with boat lines and only pedestrians can reach it because there is no cars on the island. It is formed of sand laid on the rock, covered with a rostrum, and it is known for its sandy coves, an interesting dialect and folk costumes. At first there were Illyrians, then Romans, while Croats inhabit the island in the 8th century. The church of St. Nicholas was built by a bishop of Osor on the ruins of the Abbey where the Benedictine monastery was, which was the gift from King Krešimir to Benedictines. There are also traces from Austro-Hungarian and Italian administration. There is one village on the island of the same name, Susak, and two hamlets, Gornje and Donje Selo, which are connected by a stone staircase passing through the reed.
