Church of St. Marko in Makarska is one of the landmarks and points of interest in the bare town center. The bell tower can be seen from almost every part of the town, so it is easy to find the church if you rent an apartment, room or vacation house in Makarska. The church is significant not only because it is located on the main square - Kačić Square - but also because its construction started in 1700 and is never fully completed. It is a cross-section of time passing by with the styles from the Baroque till nowadays. The church occupies a raised part of the square with the stairs leading to its stone facade facing southwest. There is an altar dedicated to St. Clement to the right of the entrance, and he is the protector of the town whose bones were brought here from Roman catacombs far in 1725. The altar of Our Lady of the Rosary is settled to the left of the entrance with the wooden image of the Virgin with the child. The story is that this altar was erected at the time of the plague of 1815. Makarska Church of St. Marco suffered significant damage during the earthquake in 1962, but soon afterward it was restored and the Holy Mass is still served in today, with a schedule of 7 am and 6 pm in the winter time and 7 am and 7 pm in the summer months.
