Slatine on the island Čiovo is a small village, just eight kilometers away from Trogir, the town under the protection of UNESCO. This small island is like a part of a mainland since it is joined with it by a short bridge.
Slatine is placed on a northeast side of Čiovo. The origins of its name are, probably, from a more than few springs of brackish water existing on the island, since Slatina means spring. Čiovo is settled opposite to west side of Split, divided from it by Kaštela’s canal; this canal still abounds with underwater springs.
Slatine has around 1100 of people and 250 of home holds. From 250 employed inhabitants, 150 of the are seaman and the rest is mainly occupied by tourism, fishing and agriculture. The island Čiovo was overgrown with vine in the past, but today there are mainly olive trees. The quality of its oil is famous in Croatia.
Besides natural beauties, Čiovo has few old churches. The most beautiful is half of millennium old shrine, built on bare cliff with astonishing views on islands Brač and Šolta.
Slatine has a few pizzerias, restaurants and bars with no lack of good Dalmatian food and all night lasting fun. Accommodation can be found in numerous private apartments and rooms.
