Silba is an island placed 30 nautical miles on the West from the nearest mainland town Zadar. One can reach it with ferryboats lines from Zadar, Mali Lošinj and Rijeka. Silba is the northernmost Dalmatian island thus called ‘the gate of Dalmatia’. It is a pretty small island, with an area of about 14 square kilometers and just one settlement on it. It has 265 inhabitants today, although Silba was populated even in Roman ages. Many artifacts witness of that, such as coins, shipwrecks and sarcophaguses. Silba has a shape of a number eight; in its middle is the smaller, just 700 meters wide. There is a theory that Silba gain its name under the Roman word for forest – Silva, since Silba is the second the most forested island in Croatia after Mljet.
