Sali is the biggest place on the island Dugi otok (Long island). Dugi otok is located at the middle of Adriatic Sea. The closest city to it is Zadar. Just across Dugi otok are Kornati, which are a national park.
According to population census from 2001, total population of Sali is 1820 inhabitants, but according to locals Sali has only about 710 inhabitants. It’s very rare that tourism is not branch number one at some place at the Adriatic. But in Sali most are occupied with fishing, instead of tourism. However, tourism is in development. Last 50 years tourism evolved in Sali, and now it is on much higher level than in the 20th century. Fishing has its tradition in Sali for more than 1000 years. From the year 1905, in Sali is active fish factory Mardesic, which is also some kind of attraction, as those kinds of factories are very rare nowadays. Agriculture and olive grows are also very developed in Sali. In Sali was found the first written proof of fishing on this area.
