Rijeka City Market is not only a place where we will find an abundance of fresh foods and a rich offer of fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish, it is the daily gathering place of Rijeka`s inhabitants and their guests. The Market is set in a fantastic ambiance with several pavilions and buildings that have been built here since the end of the 19th century. The coast was an informal fish market back in those days, near a wooden dock where fishermen unloaded their catch daily. In 1866 a fish market was built, thus fish, shells, mollusks, and crabs were no longer buying outdoors. Two other pavilions were built beside the fish market for sellers of other foodstuffs. A new fish market was built to met hygiene standards at the beginning of the 20th century, according to the project of architect Carla Pergola. Pergola had set his imagination free so we have an interesting building in the style of the Vienna secession today, with a series of characters carved in stone around the pillars and on the facade of the building. The characters are the work of Urban Bottas, a Venetian sculptor, depicting the lavish sea world. If you rent an apartment, room or vacation house in Rijeka, you can reach the market by Line 8 of public transport or follow the signposts leading to the ferry port, which is in the vicinity of the Market in Rijeka. You will recognize the place after the vividity and murmur of the buyers and by the frieze of stoned marine organisms inviting you to visit the fish market and enjoy the fresh present of the sea and the soil.
