Departing from the continent to the sea will take you through Rastoke near Slunj. No one will remain indifferent in front of the unusual scene and glance at Rastoke which are settled along the old state road to the sea. Rastoke is relatively close to the Plitvice Lakes and anyone who has found an accommodation in Slunj or Plitvice should take the time to get off the road and visit the magical village at the mouth of Slunjčica and Korana rivers. It is the place where water is playing games with limestone rocks and on its way to the great sister Korana created a multitude of sedge barriers through which water flows in rapids and waterfalls, creating a multitude of small lakes. The place is called Little Plitvice Lakes with the most famous waterfalls Hrvoje, Buk and Fairy`s hair, but not just the beauty of nature is amazing here. Rastoke is displaying a special synergy of natural beauty and human hands, on the mouth itself, over waterfalls and lakes, the village is rising where 60 people live. Initially, there were mills which swirled the power of water and used it in everyday jobs. The first such mill dates back to the 17th century. Today, there are houses, restaurants, and taverns as well, all of stone and wood coming out of the water and it is a wonder that here in a mist of water taps, life goes on in its luxuries and silent unobtrusive beauty. Rastoke have been registered as a cultural monument since 1969 and the harmony of natural and human heritage has remained preserved in its original form to this day. Plitvice Lakes are only 33 kilometers southwards, thus many stops here and remain captivated by scenes and experiences in the intact piece of medieval Croatia. The gastronomic offer of Rastoke is exceptional with an emphasis on dishes of river trout fish that inhabits the waters of Slunjčica and Korana. The trout does is not liked only by the gourmets, but by the otter as well whom we will easily spot among the waterfalls if we are only a bit more careful or lucky.
