Castles in Pučišća

The Castles in Pučišća are a series of towers and buildings that are carved out of the famous Brač stone which gives a romantic Mediterranean look to the bay. The construction of Pučišća began in 1420 when constant sea battles and pirate attacks ceased. Not that does mean that the time of peace begun, not long did it pass before the Turks had attacked, who had already took the mainland coast. Therefore, the Pučišćans were beginning to build defensive towers and castles. Today they are called the port of the castles, but only a few of them have actually been preserved. The first one is still there today - the castle Ciprijan Žuvetić erected in 1467. There are also Prodić, Mladinić, Davidović, Čipčić, Dešković and others - a total of 13 castles, which belonged to famous Pučišća families, and are ranking Pučišća among the most fortified places in the world, given the size of the bay and the number of inhabitants. There is a large Renaissance palace beside the Ciprijan Žuvetić castle.
