Plitvice Lakes are certainly the most famous Croatian national park and the inevitable place for every traveller on the way to the sea. They are located in Lika-Senj County, with all the more significant roads passing through, the ones that tourists take to reach the south and coasts of Dalmatia. Like the Krka River and the Plitvice Lakes are a karstic phenomenon, but there is the powerful Korana River here, with 16 lakes separated by sedimentary barriers formed about ten thousand years ago. It would be meaningless to include the names of all lakes and all natural beauties that one can meet in Plitvice. Numerous cascades and waterfalls are bridged by pedestrian paths leading from the upper to lower lakes, across the streams of Plitvice and Korana, to the caves and the jungle of Corkovo cove. The unique natural heritage of Plitvice and the amazing beauty of the landscape are the reasons why there are more than a million visitors per year. A large number of visits endanger the eco-system of Plitvice lakes, which is why there is a serious consideration to restrict access to the Park. Hurry before any restrictions and look for accommodation in Plitvicka jezera or the surrounding area. Plitvice Lakes are equally enchanting in the summer, as well as in the winter, when the ice gathers waterfalls and streams to paint the most balmy winter idyll in the heart of the forested Lika. In 1979, UNESCO declared this area a world nature heritage site, and the Plitvice forests are the part of the European natural heritage protection of NATURA 2000 programme. In addition to the unprecedented forests with the most common beech, 55 species of orchids are found in the Park area with a rare Yellow Lady Pedal. Plitvice has a brown bear, wolf and lynx, and you can often hear a presence of a woodpecker or a owl. You can explore numerous hiking trails, but only if you respect the nature and habitat of many animal species.
