Pican is a small municipality in the heart of Istria, counting 10 settlements. You can find accommodation in Pican or in the surrounding towns: Kukurini and Krbune, Jakomici, Oric, Sveta Katarina, Zajci, Tupljak, Grobnik and Montovani, all within a distance of 50 kilometres. The municipality has fewer than 2000 inhabitants, most of which settled in the picturesque and fairy-tale Pican. It is only 12 kilometres away from Pazin. It is located on an altitude of 360 meters above sea level with a beautiful white bell tower in the centre of town. The bell tower dates back to the 19th century, it is 48 meters high and apart from being one of the tallest, it is considered one of the most beautiful in Istria. Because of its exceptional cultural and historical heritage, Pican was declared a cultural monument in 1962. It has changed names through the centuries, but it is presumed that here were settlements of old Celtic. Pliny and Ptolemy called it Pucinum a fortress in the interior of Istria, which was famous for its wine. The wine from Pucinum, which is now believed to be Pican, used to drink wife of Emperor Augustus and she attributed it merits to her longevity. It is certain now that Middle Ages Pican was secured by stone walls which are partly preserved today. In the 14th century the city gates were built and restored in the 17th century. It is also certain that Pican has preserved the mystical spirit of past times, those obscured by the foggy waves of mysteries, legends and myths. From ancient times until the 18th century, this city was the residence of the only diocese in Istria. Perhaps that is why the remaining bishopric palaces, churches, gerontas, and readers have been preserved. The picturesque squares, lanes, and chalk-lined buildings in the white limestone spell the magic of ancient times and are ideal for escape from the dry grove everyday life. Walking trails around Pican and its surroundings are undemanding and offer fascinating views that will enchant you and make you will fall in love with Pican. The Benkovski Slap is one of these destinations, but you can experience its beauty only after heavy rainfall when the water haze winds up to 18 meters high in Grajanski potok. There are also bicycle tours; From Gracisca to Oric, partly on the macadam road, 33 kilometres long and spanning 47 kilometres to Pazin. Even more excitement and entertainment in Pican is at the beginning of August when the phenomenal Legendfest, the festival of legends, myths and the stories of Istria, begins.
