Old town of Vinica

Amid the green Zagorje landscape, atop a hill standing 260 meters above sea level, lies the old town of Vinica. If you have rented affordable accommodation in Vinica, you will easily find the guardian of this place, which has peacefully observed the passage of time for centuries, just a twenty-minute walk from the city center. The history of the castle dates back to prehistoric times when the first settlements were located in this area. Mentioned as Castrum Vinica for the first time in the 14th century, the city became the property of King Sigismund. Later, it belonged to the Counts of Celje, Ivan Vitovec, Ivan Korvin, and Ivan Gyulay. In 1555, the old town of Vinica was engulfed in a catastrophic fire that almost destroyed it. However, it was later reconstructed. After the death of the last Gyulay, it belonged to Nikola Istvanffy, then changed owners: Counts Keglević, Drašković, Malakoczy, Erdody, and Bombelles. Today, only ruins remain of this once powerful city. Nevertheless, it is an excellent place for a stroll and active vacation in Vinica. The old town of Vinica is a place of mystical history, silence, and an escape from the contemporary pace of life.
