Nehaj Fortress in Senj is a fortress that looms over the city - you will have sweet dreams if you have rented accommodation in Senj under its watchful eye. Nehaj is located on Trbušnjak Hill. It was built in the 16th century and served as a military fortress for the Uskoks, who used it as a place to defend the city of Senj and prepare attacks on the Ottomans and Venetians. The fortress has an interesting cubic shape and is oriented towards the cardinal points. It was constructed from materials taken from churches, monasteries, and houses originally located outside the city walls. It stands 18 meters high and is 23 meters wide. The walls narrow towards the top and end with a cornice featuring five small corner towers. Within the walls, there are about a hundred rifle slits and eleven large cannon openings. The interior of the fortress is divided into three floors, where numerous cultural events are held today. Nehaj Fortress in Senj is one of the most important historical monuments in Croatia. It is a symbol of the city of Senj and the Uskok resistance against the Ottoman threat. Open to the public, it is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Senj. From the top of the fortress, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Senj, Kvarner Bay, and Velebit mountain.
