Under shady trees of orange and among floral stripes in the garden of St. Mary Monastery in Zaostrog, you'll find a rest from a shivering hot asphalt of this magical Mediterranean town. Monastery can be visited in a winter too, because it is open through a year, and here one can find much more than just a piece of mind. It is situated in the bare center of the town. It can be approached from two sides; the south entrance will lead you to a museum, a library, a botanical garden and a gallery, whilst the western entrance will take you to a Monastery church. The Monastery is built in 15th century, as assumed, whilst its final shape gets in 17th century. St. Mary Monastery is pronounced as the most beautiful monastery of this region at the beginning of 17th century. It belongs to Franciscans who made a great effort to preserve and value sacral, economical and cultural heritage in their huge archive. Thus, in the year 1953, the Monastery was established as a monument of culture. Rich museum display and gallery of Mladen Veža, Croatian painter, are crowned by a unique exhibit - the cloak of the Bosnian king Stjepan Tomas (1444th to 1461st).
