Medvednica is a mountain that rises above the capital of Croatia. From its slopes, Zagreb is lyingly lurking in its descending on the shores of Sava. Medvednica is also called Zagrebacka gora (hinterland) and it is the most popular excursion site of inhabitants of Zagreb and the surrounding area. In addition, Medvednica is also a nature park and few world metropolises can boast such a forest reserve close to peripheral city neighbourhoods. The highest peak of Medvednica is Sljeme at 1033 meters above sea level, so the people of Zagreb often say they go to Sljeme when they go into the magical shades of oak and chestnut forests. Otherwise, there are even 12 forest communities in Medvednica, thus we can even meet here maple, beech, ash, hornbeam and other forest species. The botanical garden is varied and spring is dressing Medvednica in floral clothes - over 1200 species call this mountain their home. Numerous animal species have disappeared from Medvednica long ago, such as lynx, deer, wolf, otter and grumble. However, some of them have survived the pressure of a million city under the feet of the Park, thus we can still find here wild cats, lizards, squirrels, and kubs. The cave of Veternica is a well known habitat of 18 species of bats, of which seven are endangered. Apart from numerous speleological curiosities, Medvednica is famous for its mills and watermills, mines, hiking and cycling trails, castles, rich ethnographic heritage and legends. If you rent an apartment, a room or a rental home in Zagreb or its surroundings, go on a trip to Medvednica. There are as many as 10 mountain lodges here, and many also offer comfortable accommodation for travellers. In addition, mountain huts are known as places if you want something warm and well-cooked, and the menu most frequently includes traditional Central Croatia specialities, such as strukli or turkey meat with mlinci. Although the trails are generally less demanding and suitable for all ages of adults, including children, take the map along, dress in layers and bring enough water. Relax and enjoy under the leafy Zagreb mountain.
