Malachological Museum Makarska

Although most tourists rent an apartment, room or holiday house in Makarska to enjoy the sea and the sun, Makarska offers attractions for those who want to know more about the sea than the temperature suitable for swimming. In the beautiful ambience of this Mediterranean town at the foot of Biokovo Mountain there is one of the most important museums that preserve the treasures of the sea. It is a Malachological Museum which was founded in Makarska in 1963. The Malachological Museum of Makarska is located in the Franciscan monastery in the centre of the town, in a building which is a protected monument of culture. Museum was founded by theologian and scientist Fr. Jure Radic with the help of numerous enthusiasts, scientists and collectors who helped him to build a valuable collection of Adriatic bivalve molluscs. Today's museum exhibit counts about 3,000 shells, including those from tropical and subtropical seas which we cannot find if we dive under the waves of the warm Adriatic. The excellence of the Makarska coastal area is illustrated by herbarium of plants from Biokovo and a palaeontological collection that also attracts the visitors of the museum. The largest European collections of molluscs is seen by many curious people throughout a year, and the Malachological Museum is open twice a day between 10am and 1pm and 5pm to 7pm.
