Lastovo Islands Nature Park was proclaimed in 2006. It consists of 44 islets, islets and rocks, including the largest island of Lastovo. The rest are divided into two island groups, Lastovnjaci and Vrhovnjaci, along with the island of Susac. Apart from its exceptional landscape beauty, Lastovo Islands are characterized by exceptional biodiversity and richness of underwater. There are 703 plant species here, out of which 53 fight for survival on Earth, with 141 species of vertebrates, and 71 species endangered among them. Romans had called it Augusta Insula later, meaning the Imperial Island. The earliest evidence of island settlement originates from Raca cave from the Bronze Age. The biggest settlement Lastovo is located on a hill above the field and is the heart of the island's cultural life. Like many other Dalmatian settlements which were built in the interior of the island, Lastovo has its own port in the bay of Lucica, with one of the most preserved baroque settlements on this part of the coast with stone fish houses from the 17th century. The sacral architecture is marked by as many as 21 objects protected as a cultural good of a total number of 38 churches. In addition to material cultural assets, Lastovo has the immaterial ones as well, which are now protected goods of the Republic of Croatia. Those are Lastovo carnival (poklad) held in February each year, as well as the Lastovo statute, a book of decree and customs dating from 1310.
