Kornat is the largest island in the archipelago of Kornati, which counts 89 islands and islets. The entire Kornati area occupies 70 square kilometres with almost half of this area belonging to Kornat with its 32.4 square kilometres. It is interesting that a permanent settlement was never developed on Kornat, although the bay Vrulje has about 60 houses, mostly inhabited in the summer months or in the fall when olive harvest takes place. Although at a first glance Kornat seems to be a habitat of rubble and rocks, there is some fertile land which is the reason for colonization of the island. The land on Kornat is private, belongs to residents of the nearby Murter island, a place from where ships sails to Kornat. The Kornat colonization started in the 6th century, evidenced by the Tureta fortress, which is located on top of the hill that served as an observation tower, while the church of St. Mary was built in the centuries that followed. There is more to the cultural heritage here, you can visit the church of Our Lady of Tarc, the Illyrian fortress, the remains of the salt fields in the Lavsa bay, the remains of the Venetian fortress and the shepherd's dwellings. There is Kruna, the cliffs overlooking the open sea, so Kornat never gets boring, and more than 500 plant species that cover this area. Underwater boasts with many sea species, it is a paradise for fishermen and divers, while the mainland has a whiting, the only beast on the island, quite small but vivid. Kornat restaurants and taverns are a favourite boating destination and there is never a lack of entertainment or opportunity to meet new people. Still, there is nothing to disturb the silence and the peace of summer nights near the high seas.
