Komiza is located on the west side of the island Vis in the deep bay. From the rest of the island is separated by mountain massif Hum (highest peak is 587 meters), which drops steeply to the shores of the bay. It is connected with town Vis by the road, and disctance is about 10 kilometers, but if you go from the southern side in that case distance is about 20 kilometers.
Komiza is now a town, since the year 1993. It still doesn’t have
more than one hotel, which has capacity of 300 beds, but accommodation
could be easy found in private apartments and some beautiful villas.
Population of Komiza is 1667 inhabitants, according to population census from the year 2001. The most of the population are still fishermen, as fishing was main occupation in Komiza for many years. But nowadays, especially last few years, Komiza starts its development in tourism, and many inhabitants already started directing all its efforts on that branch.
Main beach is pebble beach, and while you swim the view is unbelievable. In from of you is open sea, and you can see tankers on the huge distance, and just on the left are ruins of small old fortress.
Gastronomic offer is also something what should be highlighted, as many restaurants has small pools with live lobsters, fishes and other sea food, so you can show which lobster, or which fish you want to eat for that dinner.
Interesting is that in Komiza are many sources of drinking water, where fresh drinking water springs from the ground, even on one beach, only exactly few meters from the sea. That beach is called Kamenice.
Streets are in typical old Mediterranean style, all from stone, and very tight. But something what you must visit is Modra Spilja (Blue Cave) on the islet Bisevo. Unforgettable experience is to swim in it, as sea is just inside of it, and you will experience blue effect, as everything is blue because of the sea and sky, really incredible and beautiful.
