The largest county of Croatia is situated at the crossroads of routes from Gospic to Knin and Dalmatia. The county of Gračac with its 957.19 square kilometers is covering more than a quarter of the Zadar county area. The accommodation in private apartments is more easy to find in the city of Gracac which counted 3063 inhabitants according to the last census in 2011. Gracac is also the center of the county which includes 39 other towns and villages. Located in a wide valley at the foot of the Velebit mountain, Gracac boasts picturesque scenery with a slight mixture of Mediterranean and continental climate. This is where Dalmatia can already be sensed in the meadows and green sunny pastures, as well as in fast clouds that bend to the Velebit on their way to the sea. The fertile land is crossed by numerous rivers and streams. Some of them pass through Gracac where one of these turns into Otuca river. The town was mentioned for the first time as Otuca in the 14th century, the old Croatian parish which included the area of Gračac and Lovinac. At that time, the city was held by the noble Croatian Ivan Karlovic, and otherwise it was inhabited by the Croatian noble families who have retained their autonomy and self-government. The Otuca parish had collapsed after the conquest of the Turks. The city of Gracac, as we know it today, is developed after the liberation from the Turks, especially in the 18th century, when it strengthened its traffic significance, with the construction of Gospic-Gracac-Knin road. Lately Gracac experience the rise of the tourist offer due to the agricultural and ecological tradition. Rural farms near the town can be an extraordinary break on your way to the sea with a great gastronomic offer based on meat and dairy of authentic Lika region. One of these rural farms is Derinagaj near Gracac. The Lost Theory Festival is hosted here in August, where you can enjoy great music, but also lots of different workshops and other entertaining facilities, thanks to which, Gracac will remain forever marked on your maps.
