There were numerous historic intrigues which left many cultural monuments among the green hills of Zagorje. Donja Stubica, with its unmistakable cultural, historical and architectural heritage, is still an emerald, unrecognized in Croatian tourist identity. There are several castles in the immediate and distant surroundings, some of which are in function, and others are still waiting with their long halls to be overwhelmed by many steps. The freshness and gentleness of the green hills near the capital attracted Croatian craftsmen who have raised their residences here. At the end of the 18th century, Regina Draskovic raised the castle Golubovec of Stubica. The castle has three wings, shaped like U letter, carrying all the features of late baroque classicism. It is most famous for its potato stoves. The chapel was devoted to bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac, famous for promoting Croatian culture and many cultural, educational, humanitarian and social institutions he established. The castle has changed owners and uses through history. Today, there is a Kajkavian library in the castle that was moved here in 1978 from the National and University Library in Zagreb. Since 1989, the Kajkavian Society stands here which collects, preserves and presents the cultural heritage of the Kajkavian region. The castle is left to the care of this association, with different cultural and social activities they are establishing here. If you are staying in an apartment, room or vacation house in Donja Stubica, do not miss the visit to Golubovac, you will get to know and love Zagorje and Kajkavian customs.
