Fortica on Pag is the first remnant of the turbulent past of the island that we encounter when we arrive at the Pag bridge. The ruins of a fort that once meant survival on the island can be spotted to the left of the bridge. Pag has always been the crossroads of important maritime routes, and merchant ships have been exposed to frequent pirate attacks. The fortress was built on the southernmost cliff of the island in the 17th century to make navigation safer. With dimensions of about 8 x 8 meters, the massive Fortica was home to soldiers and observers who, among other things, were in charge of preventing illegal trade. If you have rented an accommodation on Pag, you can walk to Fortica from Dinjiška which 7 kilometers away, and see its imposing remains carved in stone.
