If you are spending your summer vacation on Losinj, chances are that you will experience that magic moment when you spot a dolphin just by lying on the beach and looking out to the sea.
A study "Adriatic Dolphin Project" which includes research of ecology and biology of community of dolphins that are settled around Losinj and Cres, was founded in 1987. The project was led by the research team of Tethys Institute at the beginning, but in 1999 it is redirected to the NGO Blue World from Veli Losinj. It is estimated that the community of dolphins around Losinj is made of 180 individuals who now belong to the most intensely researched communities in the Mediterranean. Dolphins are monitored and identified by designation (incisions and scars) on the dorsal fins which are readily visible when a dolphin exit to the surface to inhale air. Although these animals are resistant and flexible by nature, there are many dangers threatening them unfortunately. In addition to ships disrupt and restrict their movement, the noise made by engines can badly affects their communication and orientation in space. There are also risks of deliberate killing and therefore the disappearance of dolphins is surging worldwide. If you are environmentally conscious and want to help protect these wonderful animals, join the campaign for volunteers and spend two weeks at the base of Blue World in Veli Losinj, and if you are just staying in one of the apartments in Veli Losinj, visit the institute and support their efforts to protect these precious marine mammals.
