Blato is a Mediterranean town and municipality on the island of Korcula. It is one of the oldest settlements, located in the interior of the island, on the hillside next to the field of the same name, occupying the similar geographic position as otherwise inhabited by the ancient peoples of the Mediterranean. Blato municipality includes two settlements: Blato and Potirna. Blato settlement is laying in the Zlinje plateau and spreading on the surrounding hills. The whole area is well-known for large fields, vineyards and olive groves. The dry stone legacy of the stone leg decorating the area of the municipality that extends over 60 kilometers square. Blato counts over 3000 inhabitants, while in the early 19th century almost three times more people lived here. For its exceptionally large population, compared to other Dalmatian islands, Blato can thank to those fertile fields surrounding it. Agriculture has always been the strongest economic branch of this region, especially the production of wine, olive oil, figs and carnivores. Although large numbers of olive groves and vineyards are neglected nowadays, agriculture is still one of the most important economic branches, with neglected fields gradually renewing. Blato field was occasionally flooded until 1911 when an amelioration system was built that significantly increased the area of the cultivated soil. One of the most important economic entities in Blato is Vodovod, a company which supplies the western part of the island with potable water - thus Korcula is the only Croatian island with its own water supply network.
