Babino Polje is the biggest settlement on the Croatian most forested island Mljet in the archipelago of Dubrovnik. Although the village is not on the coast, it grew into the island administrative center with 336 residents today. The fertile soil around the village terminated its significance in the past when agriculture was the most important economic branch of the island. Today Mljet is famous around the globe as one of the prettiest Croatian islands with the National Park on it. Thus, the main occupation is no longer agriculture, but tourism, and Mljet is managing to satisfy the curiosity and eager for amusement of the great number of its guests from all around.
Babino Polje is settled at the center of the island beneath the highest peak, which makes it an excellent starting point for hiking and claiming tours. It also has well-maintained and picturesque camps, churches, and palaces testifying of Mljets glorious history and restaurants with traditional home-grown food. Babino Polje was founded already in the 7th century. During the period of Dubrovnik Republic, in Babino Polje was the siege of Mljet`s duke. The legend says that the name Babino Polje, which means Granny`s Field, came out from the gifted land some duke made to an old lady, who was advising him during some local war.
Babino Polje is six kilometers away from Sobra, the ferry port of the island, and about 20 kilometers away from National Park Mljet.
