If you ever wondered which is the oldest museum in Croatia, you must have to vist Split in order to find the answer. Visit the Archaeological Museum in Split to meet the oldest museum collection in this area. The Museum was founded back in 1820 by decree of the Dalmatian government in Zadar. The museum collection was originally housed in the building along the east walls of Diocletian's Palace, while the present building was built in 1914. Here you can see the permanent exibition with the greater part of about 150,000 archaeological artifacts from the Museum of Prehistory, ancient Greek and Roman colonization of this part of the Adriatic coast, the early Christian period and the early Middle Ages. Archaeological sites in Solin and Vis with handy collections Salon and Issa are also under the direction of this Museum. The first archaeological newspaper in the region was issued by the Archaeological Museum in Split in 1878, the same publication is issued to this day.
