Istria has its own Archaeological museum in Pula, which was founded back in 1902. It is located on the western slopes of Kastel, spreading over 3600 square meters. It consists of three main collections: Prehistoric, Ancient and Medieval. Except collections at this location, the Museum has even dislocated facilities: finding Nesactium and city monuments Amphitheatre, Augustus temple, the temple of Diana, mosaic `Punishing Dirke', Sergiev arch, Twin Gate, the Gate of Hercules and the Basilica of St. Maria Formosa. It was the discovery of Nesactium which was crucial for the establishment of this museum, whose halls opened their doors to visitors in 1930. Most of the former exibits was discharged at the end of World War II and transferred to Italy. The Museum reopened in 1947 as a specialized Archaeological Museum of Istria. The efforts of the former administration were crucial for the return of a large part of the exhibit from Italy, and the museum collection is constantly updating with the newly found artifacts.
